GUINEA PIG EMERGENCY!

I looked into my guinea pig's playpen and saw to my horror a pool of blood! He was on his own and there was nothing in the pen to hurt him.

I picked up Poppet, turned him over and examined him all over; mouth, ears, and yes 'down there too'. Nothing. But it was a pool of blood, therefore it must be internal.

Don't panic! As usual in emergency situations I prayed to God. It says in Psalm 91 'He who dwells in the shelter of the the Most HIgh, will rest in the shadow of the Almighty'. So I placed Poppet there.

What better, safer place to be, than in the arms of God.

Yes, I know what you 'Frum' readers will be saying. Is this woman crazy. You can't pray for a guinea pig.

Of course you can!

God gave us a mandate in the garden of Eden to look after all creatures great and small, and Poppet my guinea pig is one of God's creatures. My attitude and behavior towards Poppet and how I treat him will be judged by God.

Animal cruelty and negligence is just not on.

I ordered a taxi and rushed Poppet to the vets. The taxi driver was sympathetic and took his mission seriously, trying to find the quickest route to get Poppet there as quickly as possible. When we arrived, the driver offered to stay half hour, no charge and then take us back home.

I rushed with trepidation into the deserted surgery wondering whether I would be leaving the surgery without Poppet. Internal bleeding must be serious. They might have to put him to sleep.

The vet told me that my guinea pig could be suffering from a bladder infection, which apparently, are common in guinea pigs, or it could be stones in the bladder. She gave him an injection and prescribed anti-biotics.

As the vet was holding Poppet in her arms I suddenly realized just how cute and cuddly he was and how blessed I was to have him. Poppet is an Abyssinia piggy with mounds of cream disheveled hair that sticks out all over the place and lovely small pink eyes. He is the picture of cuteness. The vet said how healthy he looked and commented on his hair cut. That morning I had given Poppet a wash and blow dry which he loves and so his fur was lovely glossy and soft.

Thank God the taxi driver was waiting patiently for us when I left the clinic so we were home in no time.

I sat Poppet on my knee and fed him a drop of anti-biotic with a syringe, then gave him a cuddle. I always wear a waterproof apron when I have Poppet on my knee which was a good thing as he suddenly weeeeed and it was bright red.

Surprisingly, despite this bleeding, Poppet's appetite was good and he didn't seem in any pain, but I steeled myself in the morning when I went up to his cage to see how he was. Anything could have happened in the night.

Good news. The bleeding had stopped. The sawdust was wet but not red. I continue to give Poppet his anti-biotic.

Now I wait and see how Poppet progresses.

I am thankful to God that the bleeding has stopped and that the taxi driver and emergency vet were so helpful.

UPDATE

3 weeks later my beloved Poppet passed way.

He had suffered the infection 3 weeks despite being on anti-obiotics the whole time.

I nursed him the whole time, and on his last day I cuddled him throughout, feeding him water by syringe to make his passing easier and comfortable.

I took the decison rather than rush him to the vets on his last day to get them to put him to sleep, to let him pass away at home where all sights, smells and sounds were familiar and he would feel safe and secure.

I held him in my arms just minutes before he passed away and kissed his little nose. At 15 minutes past midnight he gently passed away ...

I kissed, cuddled and wept over him. Cut off some of his cream hair to keep, put him in a box and ocvered him with lavender which had been grown in my garden.

I took a photograph of him.

Poppet had such life and personality, that it makes me wonder where the inner life that was Poppet, that made him an individual able to feel pain and pleasure went to. Will there be animals in heaven? Where has the spirit of Poppet gone to I wonder. I cannot accep that it has just disappeared, his spirit, his personality, the life that inhabited that still body of flesh must be somewhere.

Jesus said in His kingdom He had many rooms. Perhaps He has one for good guinea pigs. Who knows? Laugh you might, but it might be the case in the next world, in heaven Poppet will be there. Who knows except God.

Oh: My denial is only in appearance. It is because of technical necessities.
