A Response to Kaddish V. The Lord's Prayer

Once again, I am not getting any feedback on yesterday's entry. This is not just reading what is going on inside my head, but an opportunity to find out what you think because we are being confronted with Christian challenges to Judaism, and trying to get us to walk away from our Jewish identity and Torah, while embracing the pagan teaching and practices in Christianity.

It is a major cause for concern, and I feel it is time to respond to the growing attacks on Judaism by fundamental Christianity.

Not all Christians are like those who are so quick to convert everyone. We do have some who are open to the Hebraic thought and perspective in the Scriptures and it is so good to see our Jewish brothers and sisters who were Christians, after reading the Hebrew Scriptures in its full context, return to Judaism and those non-Jewish Christians are moving toward living the Noachide Laws, and even convert to Judaism. That's the power of Ruach Elohim through Torah.

Let's get right to this discussion on these two prayers.

Though they are very different in nature, yet the Lord's Prayer is used in the common Jewish prayer language and it is a personal, private prayer people would say, believing that HaShem would provide us with our daily bread rather than us having to get out and earn it ourselves by our own effort.

The Kaddish is a joyous expression of praise to HaShem and of hope for the speedy acknowledgment of divine sovereignty by all humanity, and was originally recited in Talmudic time at the end of the rabbinic study session.

Both prayers are subject to the same influence but different results. What do you think?

    Quoting APPLEBLOSSOM:
    THE LORD'S PRAYER

Jesus asks people to pray the following:

'Give us today our daily bread'.

Bread is made up of flour and water.

Flour is made from wheat which is grown in the soil. To obtain wheat, first you have to plant seed ...

There is good seed and bad seed. Anyone who does gardening who has tried growing anything from seed knows that not all seed germinates, so sometimes you can get a good crop and sometimes little. If the seed for any reason is damaged, ie. through diseases, excess water, then the seed will not germinate and grow.

It is vital when you plant seed that you only water it slightly, but often throughout the day. Too much water at this stage of germination will kill the seed. This is why in Pakistan, because of the floods, so many of the crops are damaged.

It is not only the crops that are damaged, but any seed that has been planted. Also seed that has been stored anywhere, if it is excessively wet, it will not germinate and grow.

    Seed is potential bread.

what has this got to do with the Lord's Prayer you may ask.

    A lot.

We all depend on God that the seed that is planted will 'take', will germinate and for the wheat to grow. Poor quality seeds produce poor quality wheat. We don't want that. We all want a good quality wheat and an abundance of it too.

It is important that the soil is fertile and not diseased and has not been over planted. Good planting and harvesting practices should mean that a field of soil can have a year off from growing crops and so replenish itself.

Soil can be poisoned by sewage and chemicals, so it is a precious commodity.

Good soil produces good wheat for good tasty bread.

The growing process from the seed being planted in the soil, the germinating and then the growing time to produce a crop can be fraught with difficulties.

If there is a drought and the growing seed does not have enough water many of the seeds will not germinate so the crop will be smaller. There will be less wheat grown and so less flour to make bread..

People will grow hungry, suffer malnutrition or starve.

Shortage of crops can mean life or death for a nation.

The same goes for heavy rains. Too much water is just as bad as having too little so we are dependent on God to send just the right amount at the right time! If God decides for one reason or other to send no rain, or floods, then you are in sch tuck! Real trouble, serious trouble.

We are totally dependent on the mercy of God to give us water, whether it be from the sky or from wells. If any of these resources dry up then we are in serious trouble!

The fact is without water from the heavens pouring down on our crops we would not have the wheat to make the bread.

Another thing. To actually make a loaf of bread, you need flour and water, so if in the worst case scenario you have the wheat but no water you cannot make bread!

All the money, riches, and human power in the world cannot cause the sky to open up and send rain.

    Without water we are dead.

We need God to be willing to send us water for our survival.

And it is only God that can provide water for our crops.

It is God who gives us the water that is in our wells, reservoirs, lakes and waterfalls. We must never take it for granted.

If God decided to stop sending rain completely we would all eventually die, and a slow, painful, horrible death it would be too.

In praying 'give us our daily bread' we are also acknowledging to God our dependence on Him for His continued resources of water, good seed and soil.

Jesus is not expecting us to sit on our tochus and expect slices of bread to fall down from the sky! No. That would be silly.

Jesus knew when he said those words 'Give us our daily bread' that the Jewish listeners would immediately think of the time when God fed the children of Israel in the wilderness, but that amazing provision only happened at a specific time because of specific circumstances.

God is God, and He choose to fulfill the prayer of 'give us our daily bread' in many different ways.

The provision of food and water in the wilderness is a reminder not only of the remarkable and unusual ways God can support us, but for us to also have faith in God to provide us in ingenious and unusual ways; whether it be though overseas aid to the starving or people being inspired to create new machinery, create substances that deal with crop disease and special electrical sprayers.

If we can just stand back and view all of this provision as ULTIMATELY coming from God.

    I might give you a nice homemade loaf of bread, but the provision of it ultimately comes from God. See it as a chain:;

Me - wages - job - employer - banks giving loans to businesses to set up - investors in banks - investors jobs etc ..

What I am trying to get across here is that ultimately everything comes from God. We say we have gone out and earned it. But you can only work if you have the strength to do, and for that you are dependent on God.

God by prayer, I believe, is in the midst of us, interceding and helping us so that we may not boast of ourselves but of Him for His provision.

This is why believers and non-believers in Jesus can both agree on these words and say "THANK GOD"

    P.S. AFTERTHOUGHT

Remember all the following can affect whether wheat will flourish:

    Good Seed
    No disease
Adequate water - not too much at once, or too little
    adequate temperature
not too hot and not too cold
    Winds
    wild animals
    infestation and disease

At every stage of wheat growing from the seed germinating, to growing, harvesting and distribution it is vital that nothing disrupts and spoils the wheat.

In very poor countries, when flour is sent for the starving it is vital that it is protected and distributed.

'Give us our daily bread' can also mean and include the vans, the manpower that it takes to deliver the flour to the people so they can make the bread. Without this the people will not have the bread!

So in this prayer we are asking God to influence and control the whole process. We want God on our side to make sure no-one attacks our vans and steal the flour which is meant for the poor. We want him to safeguard the vehicles and the people who are distributing the flour. If the vans break down, the bread will not arrive.

So when you pray to God 'Give us our Daily Bread' consider all these things and marvel at how dependent we are on God for life. Because without water wheat cannot be made into bread.
